As the news of the tragic shooting in the Jewish Community Center in Kansas City and Village Shalom, a Jewish retirement community, broke across the nation, here are a few thoughts and prayers that I wanted to share:

1)  Silence, Grief, and prayers.

A targeted hate-crime by a killer with a history of decades of racist organization has led to the murder of three people in a Jewish community center on the eve of Passover.  With our media speculation, no doubt so much of the focus will turn on the background of the killer, but let us pause to begin by honoring the victims.  Let us learn their names (still not disclosed), their lives, their hopes, their dreams.   Let us honor them.   May their memory be blessed.

Let us be mindful that Passover is going to be particularly difficult for this community, and for many other Jewish communities across America this year.

 2)  This is about all of us.

The great Rabbi Heschel said:   “Few are guilty, all are responsible.”

All of us are responsible in uprooting and transforming the wave of hatred and violence sweeping our nation.   Justice is holistic, and a threat to justice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, as we have been so often told.    Injustice likewise is holistic.    The individual that targeted this group has a long history of making anti-Jewish, anti-Black, anti-women, and anti-Muslim statements.   As we have so often seen, once a person closes their heart to one block of humanity, they tend to move on to hating multiple marginalized groups.

Let us recognize the connection between this crime and the shooting against the Sikh Gurdwara in Wisconsin, the many attacks against mosques, the targeting of African-Americans from the Trayvon case to Stop and Frisk, and more.

3)  The shooter is not “mad”, “crazy”, “deranged”.  This is a case of Domestic Terrorism.

Let us resist every attempt to soften the savagery of this attack by calling it the work of a single, isolated, lone madman.    Yes, there are facts that still need to be collected, but there is a trail of evidence that’s hard to ignore.

The killer, Glenn Miller, is a man with over 30 years of racist activism.    He is the former “grand dragon” of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, according to the SPLC.

He idolized Hitler, patterned himself after him, and in fact shouted out Hitler’s name from the police car in Kansas City after he was apprehended. Here is what he says in his autobiography:

“I would try to emulate Hitler’s methods of attracting members and supporters….In the years to come, for example, I placed great emphasis on staging marches and rallies. It had been successful with Hitler.”

Miller organized a White Patriot Party, loudly proclaimed his hatred for Jews, for gays, for blacks, for Muslims on his website.

What more does Glenn Miller, aka this hate-monger have to do for us to recognize this as a hate crime, indeed one of domestic terrorism?

Here are quotes from him that the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the most respected civil rights organizations in the country, has compiled:

“White men have become the biggest cowards ever to walk the earth. The world has never witnessed such yellow cowards. We’ve sat back and allowed the Jews to take over our government, our banks, and our media. We’ve allowed tens of millions of mud people to invade our country, steal our jobs and our women, and destroy our children’s futures. America is no longer ours. America belongs to the Jews who rule it and to the mud people who multiply in it.”
–  U.S. Senate radio ad, 2010

“Today, true statistics be told, we’re less than half. And we’re dropping fast, while the dark peoples multiply like rats all around us, and as more tens-of-millions of them invade our country from all over the world. Our race is drowning literally in seas of colored mongrels. Our people buy almost twice as many caskets as cradles. Your race is dying before your eyes.”
– “Attention White Youth!” Miller’s website, March 12, 2010

“That’s a sad commentary for our politicians in Washington. They’re all a bunch of whores for Israel. They’re all corrupted to the core. And they are traitors to America.”
–  Interview with Howard Stern, April 6, 2010

“Woman have always chosen cowardice and slavery over war and violence for the obvious reason they’re the weaker sex. And they have responded to White male cowardice in the only way they could. They kiss up to every male but White ones.”
–   “Cowardice is the White Man’s Survival Strategy!” Miller’s website

“Our forefathers were absolutely right to be racists and to discriminate in favor of themselves. That racism and discrimination insured racial security, prosperity, and racial survival and procreation. ZOG and the Jews-media tricked us and shamed us out of our racism shame that has weakened us and divided us as a people, therefore cowards, unwilling to resist Jewish enslavement and genocide.”

No, call it what it is.  This is a hate crime.
This is politically motivated terrorism.
If this is not terrorism, then indeed the term terrorism has no meaning.

Prayers to the victims and their families.
And let us pursue with great vigilance the alarming rise of white extremist groups all over the country, as the SPLC has been documenting.

This is not the work of one solitary crazed man.
The SPLC has tracked 939 extremist KKK, white-supremacist, and other hate-groups.
We have a lot of work to do.

  1. Two of the names have been disclosed:

One of them was William Lewis Corporon, a Johnson County doctor. The other, Reat Griffin Underwood, was Corporon’s 14-year-old grandson, who died later at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

  2. Omid, you make an interesting argument why Frazier Glenn Cross should be charged as a terrorist. It’s important to understand that the violence was deliberately perpetrated on civilian noncombatant victims, and therefore, given his political viewpoints, coupled with his previous association with the KKK and the White Patriot Party, he’s clearly a fanatical, right wing extremist.

don’t see the word terrorism here either? nor terror charges, must be a KVC thing?

        • Youssef El Ashmawi

Yes, the highway shootings might be classed as terrorism. It depends on the motive of the shooter. The Jewish community center shooting was clearly terrorism because of the political motive of the shooter. So far we do not know the highway shooter’s motivation.

          • True, those charges may come. For both of them. I guess my poorly made point is that terror charges don’t always come right off the bat in any situation. The muslim guy in Conneticut who was arrested on immigration charges hasn’t been charged with terror charges either, even though an undercover fbi agent is reported to have him on tape saying he wanted to use drones to bomb things.

          • Youssef El Ashmawi

Yaqin, why do you keep trying to change the subject? I think you and Anton are only proving Dr. Safi’s point. You bring up someone SAYING that he would like to do something. You bring up another person whose most likely motivation for his actions was road rage. Why? Because the former is Muslim and the latter’s name is Muhammad. Yet plenty of non Muslims make threats and there have been numerous road rage incidents that have turned violent. None of these people are charged with terrorism nor is there any public clamor that they should be. But when presented with a man who gunned down three people because he thought they were Jewish and literally shouted out his political motivation as he was being arrested, you find it incredibly difficult to label his attack as terrorism. WHY?
