I often ponder the impact that words have on the environment in which we reside. The way that one anticipates word can uplift our hearts, and transform the world in which we live. Or one cruel word can crush our world. Or one word, not uttered, or uttered without the full meaning we hope for, can transform our world, our reality.
Modern linguistics has probed the deeper meaning of how we construct meanings and even “worlds” in which we reside. This same insight was reached in a more subtle way by the great Muslim poetic sage, Rumi.
What insight Rumi has! We build the world in which we reside through words we use.
Hasten, my love!
speak to me fresh words
so that both this world
and that world
Through this fresh word of love
the whole cosmos expands beyond limits…
Thought it burns me.]
What burns up the heart
will build up the heart.
هین سخن تازه بگو تا دو جهان تازه شود
آنچ جگرسوزه بود باز جگرسازه شود
May the words we use be words of love, to build a world of love.
May we be creators of this new world of love.
